You may have heard vaping is a less harmful alternative to smoking, which it is, but you may also be left wondering Why? Riot Squad is here to deep-dive into the core differences of Smoking Vs Vaping.
E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavourings and other food grade chemicals that you inhale, whilst regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease says “there’s almost no doubt that they (e-cigarettes) expose you to fewer toxic chemicals than traditional cigarettes.”
The NHS also recognises vaping as a viable method to quitting smoking saying “In recent years, e-cigarettes have become a very popular stop smoking aid in the UK. They're far less harmful than cigarettes and can help you quit smoking for good.”
One of the biggest myths where vaping is concerned is that it isn't a regulated industry and we don’t know what’s in e-cigarettes or if they’re as harmful as traditional cigarettes. Public Health England debunks this misconception around vaping in saying “ The UK has some of the strictest regulation for e-cigarettes in the world. Under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, e-cigarette products are subject to minimum standards of quality and safety, as well as packaging and labelling requirements to provide consumers with the information they need to make informed choices.”
They (PHE) go on to conclude on the debate of vaping vs smoking that In summary, e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes are not the same and shouldn’t be treated as such. It’s important that England’s seven million smokers are aware of the differences and have accurate information to inform their health decisions. E-cigarettes carry a fraction of the risk of smoking and are helping thousands of smokers to quit and stay smokefree.
Riot Squad cosigns PHE’s messaging and concludes that where smoking is concerned, it’s time to be a quitter and consider vaping the less harmful alternative.
